Rutherford County, known as the
"Heart of Tennessee," is located in the geographic center of the state, 30 miles
southeast of Nashville. It is also on the main interstate corridor between Nashville and
Chattanooga. The strategic location is one of the many reasons why Rutherford County has
achieved a very strong, growing economy structured on a diverse base of services,
manufacturing, trade/distribution, education, and medical services and technology. The
city of LaVergne alone has more than 700 businesses. Nissan Motor Manufacturing
Corporation, U.S.A., in Smyrna, is the largest automobile manufacturing facility under one
roof in North America.
Ingram Industries, Waldenbooks and several other companies have earned LaVergne the title
of the "World's Largest Book Distribution Center." LaVergne also is quickly
becoming known as the "Technology Distribution Center of the World" with Hewlett
Packard, Celestica, Dell, Hollywood Video and more. The south-central headquarters of
State Farm Insurance is situated in Murfreesboro. Agriculture and related products add to
the diversity of the county. Heritage Farms Dairy in Murfreesboro is the largest milk
processing diary in the southeast, and the state headquarters for the Tennessee Farmers
Cooperative is also in the county. Rich Products of Murfreesboro is the largest producer
of frozen dough in the world. Retail sales of nearly $1 billion, the third largest number
of high school graduates in the 10-county Nashville Economic Market, and Middle Tennessee
State University, the third largest university in Tennessee, all help ensure that the
growth, economic health and general future of Rutherford County are bright.
