Nampa
Nampa is located in Canyon County,
west of Boise, along Interstate 84 in the Treasure Valley.
Colonel W. H. Dewey brought his
fortune to Nampa in the 1890s. At that time it was just a small town, but Dewey attracted
railroads and built the Dewey Palace Hotel.
Today Nampa, population 46,000, is
a central location from which to explore southwestern Idaho's natural wonders and historic
sites. A railroad display at Lakeside Park features Union Pacific No. 616, a 2-8-0
locomotive. Other attractions include Canyon County Historical Museum, a former train
depot; Swiss Village Cheese, whose facilities, cafe, gift shop and outlet store are open
all week long; and Bogus Basin, ideal terrain for skiing and snowboarding. Nampa is home
to Northwest Nazarene University, a four-year Christian liberal arts college. The area's
four-season climate produces a low average temperature of 20.2 degrees in January and a
high of 92.0 degrees in July.
Caldwell
Caldwell is the seat
of Canyon County, along Interstate 84 between the Oregon border and Boise. It lies in the
Treasure Valley near the Boise River. The city is surrounded by the Weiser, Owyhee and
Boise mountains.
Caldwell saw its start as an Oregon
Short Line Railroad construction camp. The city was established in the late 1800s.
Today Caldwell, population 18,400,
is the hub of one of the top-producing agricultural counties in the nation. Tours of the
area take you behind the scenes into working farms, ranches, orchards, dairies and
vineyards, with a chance for some cheese and wine tasting along the way. Caldwell is home
to the Warhawk Air Museum, which exhibits aircraft and memorabilia from World War II. The
community experiences four seasons, including hot, dry summers and fewer than 11 inches of
rain annually. An hour's drive offers numerous recreational opportunities, such as
boating, skiing and hiking.
Meridian
Meridian was founded as
an agricultural community. Settlers homesteaded along Five Mile Creek in the 1870s. Two of
the present businesses date back as far as Meridian's incorporation in 1903--the newspaper
and a drug store that is one of the oldest continuously operating pharmacies in Idaho. The
city was named Meridian because it lies on the Boise Meridian. It is in Ada County.
